Race One - Croft Castle

Five members of Ledbury & District Harriers attended the first race. Two members having raced the day before competing in the Worcestershire Beacon Race obviously thought some extra hill training was required!!

Clifford Berry was our first runner home (20) closely pursued by Howard Abel (21). Good grouping lads. Other club runners taking part were David Horne (48), Nick Jenkins (56) and Glyn Fletcher (72). There were no women from Ledbury taking part. Because of the performance of our first four club members we were able to achieve nineth position and two points. Due to the fact only the top ten clubs gain any official points this is a great achievement for a small club. Eight teams did not receive any official points.

As a club we believe there should be an open debate on this point as this points system questions the motivation for club members who have made up a team of turning up again when they are not going to receive anything in terms of points for their efforts. For example Hereford Triathlon Club managed to raise a team for the first race came thirteenth overall and yet received nothing for their efforts. This cannot be right. All teams should receive official points and incomplete teams should receive penalty points for every member they are missing. The Cross country venues are excellent and the courses greatly varied but let us make the races more inclusive for everybody not just the top teams. We believe that races should be based on race scores like the majority of Cross Country events and the points system dropped.
